The Society for Calligraphy & Handwriting’s (SCH) next meeting is Thursday, September 19th, starting at 7:00 pm at Chinook Middle School, 2001 98th Ave NE Bellevue, WA 98004, in Room 1404. Please view our meetings page for a map and directions.
South African calligrapher, Andrew van der Merwe, will present “My Beach Calligraphy Journey”. Andrew has pioneered a new and very different form of calligraphy. In this slide show / lecture he will show and tell how it all began, how it affected his usual calligraphy practice and how it affected him spiritually.
The beach calligraphy is a wonderful enigma. As calligraphers we go to great lengths to make our work archival. We use pH neutral paper, expensive vellum, good pigments and even real gold but here is a form of calligraphy which, at first glance, looks like it has been carved in stone but is as fleeting as a shadow. Why do calligraphy which you know will be gone with the next wave? Why spend years exploring and developing it as an art form?
There is no supply fee. Enjoy participating in an optional raffle for $2.00. Andrew’s presentation is open to all SCH and Write On Calligraphers members. Visitors are welcome to attend to see if they would like to join our guild. We look forward to seeing you there!
